Nombulelo "Pinky" Moholi, an electric engineer by training, joined Telkom in 1994 as general manager of the payphone business, following stints at AEI Henley Africa and Siemens.

She was promoted in 1995 to become group executive, regulatory affairs.

Moholi, who was born in 1960 in Willowvale in the Eastern Cape and who graduated from the University of Cape Town, was a favourite to take over the reins at Telkom when Sizwe Nxasana left in 2005.

However, Transnet executive Papi Molotsane was appointed and controversially demoted Moholi and fellow former executives Belinda Williams, now group executive investor relations at Vodacom, and Oupa Magashula, now commissioner of the South African Revenue Service.

At the time, Moholi, Williams and Magashula raised concerns about corporate governance following the appointment of Molotsane and two other senior executives.
