Early life
Born in Geelong, Victoria, Australia on 19 August , Lyons grew up the youngest of three children in the suburb of Herne Hill, and later Leopold.[1] His father was an architect and the choirmaster of the Aberdeen Street Baptist Church, and designed the family's "cathedral-like" house.[2] Lyons's passion for photography started at a young age, and he attended Geelong East Technical School, where he was regularly dux of school.[3]

After completing his schooling, Lyons began work as a professional photographer at the Geelong News and Geelong Advertiser.
